Consulting with David Foggin

What do you need to understand about the people behind the work?

You have an outcome to achieve: keeping people, supporting performance or putting a change into practice. The figures tell part of the story. What are people experiencing, and how does that shape the work they do together?

I work with leaders and teams to explore those questions, bringing experience in organisational culture and customer operations alongside insights into how people prefer to work.

The preference layer

What helps people do their best work together?

We do our best work when we can play to our preferences.

People can approach the same work differently. Some want time to prepare before a discussion; others think it through by talking. Some want the detail first; others need to understand the direction. Those differences give us questions to explore with the people involved.

Sariio makes those work preferences visible. I use that understanding alongside what people tell us, your operational evidence and my experience to help you decide what to try. Pay, workload, systems and management practice remain part of the picture.

Working together

Where would it help to understand more?

Why are people leaving?

Explore people's experience alongside retention data, working relationships and the support available to them. Agree what to investigate and how you will review any changes.

Explore retention

What helps your people perform?

Look at the work people need to deliver, how they approach it and what support they find useful. Use that understanding in development and focused performance conversations.

Explore performance

What will your people need as work changes?

Explore how a planned change will reach everyday work. Listen to the people involved and consider what different teams need to prepare, contribute and put it into practice.

Explore organisational culture

I work across sectors, including BPOs and customer operations. We start with a conversation about your situation, then agree the scope, the people to involve, the fee and what you want to learn from the work. An engagement can include discovery, facilitated discussions, coaching support and a review of the actions you choose.

Experience

The experience I bring to your work.

David Foggin

I have been fortunate in the people and teams I have learned from. Each setting has raised the same practical question: what helps people contribute, and what gets in their way?

Organisational culture

My culture and integration work has included Nestlé UK, Mars Confectionery and the Deutsche Bank and Bankers Trust integration. I have also worked with the executive team at LV=. Those experiences taught me to ask how a change in direction reaches the people whose daily work must carry it.

Change readiness

I studied organisational leadership at Harvard Business School, with John Kotter as tutor and mentor. When a change is planned, I look at the aims, the working culture and what different teams say they need. That gives leaders questions to test with their people before deciding how to proceed.

Customer operations

I have also worked close to the floor: the Sage account for Sitel, American Express and Domestic & General for Inkfish, Everflow, and Shadow Global in Cape Town. Customer operations make the distance between a plan and everyday work particularly clear.

Sariio

I built the first version of the work preference map in 2007, and it has been in daily use since 2009, with more than 12,000 people across 40 organisations exploring how they approach work. Sariio exists so that each person has language for how they work best and a way to understand the people alongside them. Sitel, Sage, Nigel Frank International and SAM Headhunting, across Scandinavia, Europe, the Middle East and China, all used its first generation. See what they reported.

In their words

What clients have said about the work.

These testimonials come from David's earlier consulting work and Saviio, the first generation of the preference map behind Sariio.

“In Feb 2007, we recruited over 20 technical advisors (using Saviio for the first time). Both in terms of retention and quality, we are delighted with how Saviio has helped.”
Director for Change, Sage
“Saviio has helped unlock the potential of our middle-order performers so that we now have consistently higher results.”
Director, Telebusiness, Coors Brewers
“Both managers and candidates understand the maps more or less right away. Saviio Maps is the foundation for a deep, high-quality discussion between a candidate and a manager about how they can work together on a long-term basis.”
Partner, Radar Group, Norway
“It is simple and intuitive, and it just makes a lot of sense for all parties involved. I also find that my clients take a keen interest in the tool, involving them even more in the recruitment process.”
Soler Executive, Oslo
“Unlike many consultancy firms, there’s something very practical and relevant about what they do.”
Managing Director, Nestlé UK Beverages Division
“Saviio has a unique ability to fit perfectly with the culture, ethos and objectives of those businesses.”
HR Director, Office Depot

The book

The book behind Sariio opens online.

Alex is on the cover and features throughout the book, and she could be anyone on your floor; her work preferences are real and her name is changed. The book carries the twelve beliefs that shape Sariio, from the first, that we do our best work when we can play to our preferences, to the twelfth, that these are the good days, and the printed copy travels with me to Cape Town and London.
